Monitoring

Curtis Bay Energy exercises particular care in handling mercury and dioxin, which are known to be some of the most hazardous emissions that must be restricted by incinerators and other industries that involve combustion, such as coal-powered factories. Average emissions of dioxin and mercury at Curtis Bay Energy are currently far below state and federal limits.

Dioxin

We are confident that our facility currently has the lowest dioxin emissions of any medical incinerator in the country, and lower dioxin emissions than any of the municipal incinerators in this region. Dioxin is the most controversial and dangerous emission we confront at our facility. By using W. L. Gore’s Remedia technology, which destroys dioxin, Curtis Bay Energy has reduced dioxin emissions to a level well below legal limits.

Mercury

We are committed to reducing mercury emissions at Curtis Bay Energy. We recently installed a new Powder Activated Carbon Injection System that reduces our mercury emissions by more than 90 percent. Furthermore, we are working with a leader in emissions control technology to develop new equipment that will further limit mercury emissions and also allow mercury to be recaptured and recycled for industrial use.
